Where our data comes from
Last updated
Everything we publish about a business comes from a public register. We do not collect it ourselves, we do not buy it, and we do not ask businesses to submit it. This page names every source, what it does and does not tell you, and when we last checked.
Attribution is a condition of the licences we hold, so the statements below appear exactly as the publishers require them.

About this dataset
Register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers for England. Contains details of currently permitted registrations only; historical registrations are not included. Lower tier registrations are indefinite, upper tier registrations require renewal every three years. Registration is a legal requirement to transport, buy, sell or dispose of waste, and does not constitute an endorsement, a quality rating, or any assessment of the standard of service provided. Covers England only: Scotland is regulated by SEPA and Wales by Natural Resources Wales, under separate registers.

What a registration does and does not mean
This is the most important thing on the page, so it is worth being blunt about it.
A waste carrier registration is a legal requirement to transport waste. It is not a quality rating, a mark of competence, or an endorsement. The Environment Agency registers businesses; it does not inspect the standard of their work. Neither do we.
So when this site shows that a business is registered, it is telling you one specific, checkable fact: that its registration appeared on the public register when we last looked, and the date it expires. It is not telling you the business is good, reliable, insured, or right for your job. Those are separate questions and you should ask them.
We do not vet, approve, accredit, endorse or rate any business on this site, and we never will. If you ever see language here suggesting otherwise, it is a mistake and we would like to know about it.
Coverage
The Environment Agency register covers England only. Waste carriers in Scotland are regulated by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, and those in Wales by Natural Resources Wales, under separate registers that we do not currently hold. A business absent from this site may be perfectly properly registered in Scotland or Wales.
How current the data is
We pull the register daily and record what changed. Every listing shows the date we last checked it. The register itself only publishes registrations that are currently valid, so a registration that lapses disappears from it rather than being marked expired, which is how we detect that a business is no longer registered.
There is always a short lag between a business registering and that registration appearing. If you cannot find a business, that is worth bearing in mind before drawing any conclusion.
If something is wrong
We publish what the register says. If a listing is wrong, it is usually because the register itself is out of date, in which case the business needs to correct it with the Environment Agency and the correction will reach us automatically.
If we have made a mistake, or you would like a listing removed, email corrections@checkedandcleared.co.uk and we will look at it. See our privacy notice for how to object to your information being published.
