Check a waste carrier registration

Anyone who takes waste away from your home or business must be registered with the Environment Agency. Enter the firm's name or its registration number and this page will tell you what the public register says about it, as read on 6 August 2026. Free, and no sign-up.

Any of three works. A waste carrier registration number is the exact answer and looks like CBDU128084 — any registered carrier can give you theirs. A Companies House number like 09876543 also works, which is useful if you have an invoice in front of you. Otherwise the business name.

What a registration does and does not tell you

Registration is a legal requirement to transport waste. It is not a rating, a qualification, or a check on the standard of anyone's work. It says the firm has registered with the regulator, as the law requires of anyone who transports waste for business purposes.

The part that matters to you is the other side of it. If waste from your home is fly-tipped, you can be held responsible for it even though someone else did the dumping, unless you took reasonable steps to check who was taking it away. That is the duty of care in section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and this page exists to make those steps take under a minute.

What to ask for

  1. Ask for the waste carrier registration number before the work starts. Every registered carrier has one, and they are required to give it to you.
  2. Check it here, or on the Environment Agency's own register.
  3. Ask for a waste transfer note and keep it. It is your evidence of where the waste went, and you are entitled to one.
